Wharton and Tattersall Shine as Rain Interrupts Yorkshire's Dominance
Yorkshire 416 for 6 (Wharton 188, Tattersall 93) lead Derbyshire 76 (Fernando 5-30, Thompson 4-31) by 340 runs
James Wharton and Jonny Tattersall set a record-breaking partnership before rain interrupted Yorkshire's progress on the second day of their Vitality County Championship match against Derbyshire at Chesterfield. The duo shared a 241-run stand, Yorkshire's highest for the sixth wicket against Derbyshire, taking their team to 416 for 6 when play was halted shortly before 4:30 PM.
Wharton scored a career-best 188 from 241 balls, including 23 fours and six sixes, while Tattersall remained unbeaten on 93 off 151 balls, giving Yorkshire a commanding lead of 340 runs.
Yorkshire had dominated with the ball on the first day, and Wharton and Tattersall continued the pressure on Derbyshire during a rain-shortened morning session. Despite Derbyshire's attempts to speed up their over-rate by bowling spin from both ends, the pair easily surpassed a century-old record.
Wharton hit two sixes off Mitch Wagstaff's leg spin and, after surviving a difficult chance at deep cover on 147, reached 150 off 180 balls, with 104 runs coming from boundaries. Tattersall's innings was less flashy but equally crucial in securing Yorkshire's dominant position, surpassing the previous highest sixth-wicket partnership of 178 set by Emmott Robinson and Cecil Burton in 1921.
Derbyshire took the second new ball after 89 overs, and Wharton drove Daryn Dupavillon through the covers to bring up 400 for Yorkshire. Rain then ended another successful session for the visitors.
After lunch, Dupavillon finally broke through, having Wharton caught at second slip for the 12th highest individual score against Derbyshire in Yorkshire's history. Wharton received a standing ovation and warm congratulations from the Derbyshire fielders for his impressive innings in challenging conditions.
Jordan Thompson hit two fours before rain stopped play again, with Tattersall just seven runs short of a century. Only 35.1 overs were bowled on a day that ended prematurely due to weather interruptions.
