Cummins Encourages Konstas to Relish Boxing Day Debut
Sam Konstas, the 19-year-old set to debut for Australia in the Boxing Day Test against India, has received guidance from captain Pat Cummins. Speaking from his own experience as a young debutant, Cummins urged Konstas to embrace the moment with the carefree attitude of playing backyard cricket.
Recalling his debut at 18 against South Africa in 2011, Cummins reflected on how youth can offer a sense of freedom. He shared how his rapid rise alleviated pressure, allowing him to enjoy the experience and take risks without overthinking. He encouraged Konstas to adopt a similar mindset, focusing on fun and instinct rather than the magnitude of the occasion.
Konstas, who will open with Usman Khawaja—twice his age—joins the team for the Melbourne Test in front of an expected crowd of over 90,000. Cummins noted Konstas’ maturity and ability to handle the spotlight, supported by family, friends, and mentor Shane Watson.
Australia has made two changes for the match, with Scott Boland replacing the injured Josh Hazlewood and Travis Head declared fit after recovering from a quad strain. Head has been the series’ standout batter, amassing 409 runs, and his presence remains crucial.
Looking ahead, Cummins acknowledged the tight schedule with just a three-day break before the Sydney Test. However, he expressed confidence in the team's fitness, citing manageable workloads in earlier matches. As the spotlight turns to Konstas, the team is rallying behind the young opener, hoping he’ll make a memorable debut.
