Konstas Set for MCG Debut as Head Undergoes Fitness Assessment

The announcement regarding Sam Konstas' debut in the MCG Test has been made, confirming that he will join the ranks of the youngest Australians to play Test cricket. The 19-year-old will be the fourth-youngest Australian Test debutant, following Ian Craig, Pat Cummins, and Tom Garrett. Coach Andrew McDonald conveyed that Australia's selector, Tony Dodemaide, had shared the news with Konstas earlier that day, while the rest of the playing XI would be finalised the following day. McDonald expressed excitement about Konstas’ potential, noting his impressive skills and ability to apply pressure on opponents.

However, Travis Head is currently facing challenges due to a minor quad strain sustained during the second innings in Brisbane. While he has been participating in light activities, including batting practice and some running, McDonald acknowledged some uncertainty regarding his fitness. Despite this, McDonald maintained optimism about Head’s inclusion, emphasising that there were no major concerns as he appeared to handle the bat well.

Additionally, McDonald confirmed at least two changes to the lineup, with Konstas stepping in for Nathan McSweeney and Scott Boland replacing the sidelined Josh Hazlewood. As for other potential changes, he did not anticipate any, considering Mitchell Marsh’s fitness after overcoming previous back issues. While the prospects of Beau Webster or Josh Inglis making their debuts seemed slim, McDonald remained pleased with Jhye Richardson's training performance, indicating his readiness should circumstances require additional pace bowlers.
