West Indies Seek Balance in Batting Approach for Second Test Against England

West Indies' batters aim to strike a balance between defence and aggression as they prepare for the second Test against England at Trent Bridge. Captain Kraigg Brathwaite pointed out the need to "find a way" to accumulate runs.

In their previous match at Lord's, the tourists were dismissed for 121 and 136, resulting in a loss by an innings. None of the top seven batsmen managed more than 27 runs, which debutant opener Mikyle Louis achieved in the first innings. Brathwaite mentioned that although there were discussions about taking a more aggressive approach against England's bowlers, the primary focus would be on maintaining their efforts for longer periods.

Brathwaite stated, "It's straightforward what we need to do—we must bat much better. We've discussed ways to improve as a team, and there were some positives with the ball, despite conceding 50-60 runs too many. However, our primary goal is to put more runs on the board."

He noted that some players got starts but failed to convert them into significant scores. "It's crucial to extend those innings because the longer you stay at the crease, the easier it becomes. You need to balance putting away bad balls and grinding out the tough periods. Confidence comes from putting away bad deliveries, but the key is to work hard and extend that effort," Brathwaite added.

Despite the inexperience of many players, Brathwaite, with his 90-Test experience, remains calm despite his own lack of recent form, having scored just one half-century in his last eight Tests, averaging 15.13 since February 2023.

"I know my role is to lead by example and provide a solid foundation for the team. Captaining is something I enjoy, and as an opener, my focus is always on seeing off the new ball and staying at the crease as long as possible. It's about staying mentally tough and believing in our abilities," Brathwaite explained.

Referencing their earlier victory in Brisbane after a heavy defeat by Australia, Brathwaite highlighted the importance of resilience and learning from the first Test. He urged the team not to dwell on the lack of preparation that contributed to their performance at Lord's and to stay motivated for the challenges ahead.
