The Toronto Nationals kicked off the Global T20 cricket tournament with a commanding eight-wicket victory against the Vancouver Knights on Thursday.
After winning the toss, Toronto chose to bat first and set a target of 111 runs. They reached 111 for two wickets, with 32 balls to spare.
Former New Zealand international Colin Munro led the charge, scoring 44 runs from 39 balls, including three fours and three sixes. South African cricketer Rassie van der Dussen added an unbeaten 31 runs.
Toronto got off to a strong start, posting 36-0 after the powerplay, compared to Vancouver's 23-1 in the same period. Munro and opening partner Unmukt Chund added 41 runs before Chund was dismissed for 23 in the seventh over by Sandeep Lamichhane.
At the halfway mark, Toronto stood at 65 for one, accelerating with three sixes in the 11th over bowled by Lamichhane. Munro's innings ended at 44 when he was bowled by Paul van Meekeren in the 12th over, leaving Toronto at 88 for two.
Vancouver's innings began sluggishly, reaching only 44 for one after 10 overs. The 11th oversaw a dramatic shift, with Junaid Siddique taking three wickets, including opener Reeza Hendricks, Harsh Thaker, and Nitish Kumar, reducing Vancouver to 45 for four.
A standout moment came in the 17th over when Canadian Nicholas Kirton's exceptional fielding dismissed Dwaine Pretorius. Kirton stopped a boundary and made a precise throw to run out the South African player.
Muhammad Rohid took two wickets in the 19th over, and Siddique dismissed van Meekeren with three balls left, ending Vancouver's innings. Hendricks and Munir Ahmad were the top scorers for Vancouver, each with 23 runs.
Siddique, representing the United Arab Emirates, was named man of the match for his four wickets at the cost of 25 runs. The tournament's opening day attracted over 4,000 spectators.
The fourth edition of the tournament runs through August 11, featuring domestic and international players at Brampton Sports Park.
