Ajinkya Rahane opened the innings for CSK with Rachin Ravindra. Source: BCCI

To begin with, a game of cat and mouse

This match was a tactical classic from both sides. CSK promoted Ajinkya Rahane to open because he was carrying an injury and it was better for him to bat in the powerplay. This move worked tactically as Ruturaj Gaikwad had not been scoring quickly in the powerplay and could also be there to face Bumrah's bowling. However, Rahane did not last long and Gaikwad had to come out in the second over. Mumbai began bowling economical overs of spin before Dube had a chance to bat.

When Dube came in, Mumbai stopped bowling spin and Bumrah returned to bowl a second over within the first ten overs for only the second time this IPL season. However, Mumbai did have to bowl some slower-paced overs. Dube took a toll on Hardik Pandya and Romario Shepherd as Gaikwad slowed down from his initial score of 24 off 12 balls to offer a catch on 39 off 31. Although Rohit dropped him, Gaikwad managed to score 29 runs off nine balls before getting out.
