Tamim Iqbal Prepares for Competitive Return
Bangladesh opener Tamim Iqbal is gearing up for a return to competitive cricket in the NCL T20 tournament, set to take place from December 11 to 23. Having last played in the Dhaka Premier League, the country’s premier List A competition, in May, Tamim remains active in Tests and ODIs, although his future in international cricket remains uncertain.
Tamim's Potential Comeback Sparks Speculation
The veteran cricketer has been practicing regularly at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in recent days, fuelling speculation about a possible return to the international stage. While Tamim has not ruled out the idea of resuming his international career, no formal announcement has been made.
Hannan Sarkar, a member of the national selection panel, shared that Tamim has expressed interest in participating in the NCL T20. However, he refrained from confirming whether Tamim had shown intent to rejoin the national team. "Tamim Iqbal has conveyed his willingness to play in the upcoming NCL T20. The specifics of how many matches he will play and his schedule are yet to be finalised," Sarkar told reporters at the Sher-e-Bangla Stadium on Wednesday. He added that if Tamim participates, he will represent the Chattogram Division.
Fitness Tests a Key Requirement
Sarkar pinpointed that all players, including Tamim, must undergo fitness tests as part of the selection process. Although exceptions have been made for senior players in the past, he noted that the fitness benchmark remains a primary criterion. "Everyone must attend fitness tests. Senior players have been given opportunities even when they fell short of the benchmark, but the process applies to all, including Tamim," Sarkar explained.
Eye on the Bangladesh Premier League?
Many believe Tamim’s participation in the NCL T20 is part of his preparation for the upcoming Bangladesh Premier League. While his immediate focus remains on the domestic tournament, fans and analysts alike will be watching closely for signs of a potential return to the international arena.
