SKY supports the 192 of Mumbai
Prior to this match, Suryakumar Yadav had recorded two ducks and two half-centuries in four innings this season. On Thursday, he entered the game at No. 3 after Ishan Kishan was dismissed by Rabada in the third over. Yadav opened his account with consecutive fours off the same bowler. He continued to play well and reached his half-century.
Yadav then used his wrists to hit Harshal Patel for another boundary in the fifth over and followed it up with a cut over the off side off Sam Curran in the sixth over. Alongside Rohit Sharma, Suryakumar Yadav helped Mumbai reach 54 for 1 during the powerplay.
Together, they added 81 runs in 57 balls, with Rohit contributing only 26 to the partnership. Suryakumar dominated spinners Harpreet and Livingstone after the powerplay, while Rohit struggled to find his rhythm after being starved of strike for most of the partnership. Rohit was dismissed in the 12th over for 35 when he attempted to hit Curran over the covers but found the point fielder instead.
When Rohit left, Suryakumar had already scored fifty runs in 34 balls. Although his innings was slower than usual, the two-paced surface and the change-up deliveries from Harshal and Arshdeep Singh caused him to make false strokes.
Tilak Varma's take-down of Arshdeep in the 15th over was necessary for Suryakumar to break free in his trademark fashion. He bashed Rabada for four, six, and six in the 16th over after successfully reviewing an lbw decision earlier in the over.
Mumbai reached 148 for 2 in 16 overs with big hitters to come, making a score of over 200 seem possible. Curran dismissed Suryakumar for a 53-ball 78, which was only the second time he had faced 50-plus balls in an IPL innings. Mumbai could not get much out of Hardik or Tim David. Harshal bowled a seven-run 20th over, taking three wickets and keeping Mumbai under 200.
After the innings ended on 192 for 7, the highest first-innings IPL total in Mullanpur, Suryakumar stated to the broadcasters that he believed the score was 'way above par.' His prediction proved accurate, but not without Mumbai surviving a significant scare.
