Shakib Al Hasan Rebounds with Stellar Performance Against Netherlands
Bangladesh's experienced all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan finally ended his rough patch with a vital performance in the T20 World Cup clash against the Netherlands. Prior to this game, Shakib faced criticism and questions regarding his place in the team due to a series of underwhelming performances.
Shakib had struggled both with the bat and ball recently, impacting his reputation. However, he silenced his critics with a match-winning performance. Batting at number four, Shakib scored an unbeaten 64, marking his first T20I half-century since October 2022.
Before the match against the Netherlands, Shakib had managed only 8 runs against Sri Lanka and 3 against South Africa in his last two innings. When questioned post-match about responding to his critics, Shakib retorted that players don’t play to answer critics but to contribute to their team. He emphasised that a batsman's role is to score runs, a bowler's duty is to bowl effectively, and a fielder's job is to save runs and take catches. Shakib stated, “There's nothing to prove to anyone. The focus should be on how much a player can contribute to their team."
He acknowledged that discussions are natural when a player underperforms, viewing such scrutiny as a normal aspect of the sport. He highlighted the importance of securing points in the group stage, which has nearly guaranteed Bangladesh’s place in the Super 8s, especially after Sri Lanka's elimination. "Getting those two points was crucial," Shakib noted. "If someone had told us before we left home that we'd have four points after three matches, we would have been pleased. Winning and securing points is what counts most in a tournament like the World Cup."
Shakib reiterated his team-first approach, stating that he never focuses on personal achievements, but always considers how he can best contribute to the team's success. "If I played for personal milestones, my approach would be different. I'm satisfied playing the way that benefits the team," he said.
He also lauded young leg-spinner Rishad Hossain, who stood out once again, and credited the entire bowling unit for their collective effort. Shakib noted, “Rishad has shown great character as a newcomer, but our whole bowling squad has been contributing at different times. Contributions from bowlers like Mustafizur, Taskin, and Tanzin with the new ball create opportunities for others to excel.”
Expressing confidence, Shakib looked forward to their final group match against Nepal, believing that the team is well-positioned to secure a spot in the Super 8s. "Given our current position, there’s every reason to be confident," he said. "I’m optimistic that if we continue to perform as a team, we will succeed against Nepal."
With Shakib's resurgence and the team’s collective strength, Bangladesh appears ready to take on the challenges ahead in the T20 World Cup.
