Shadman Islam Focuses on Technique

Bangladesh opener Shadman Islam is mindful that when he faces India’s experienced spinners in the upcoming two-match Test series, he will need to maintain his technique, ensuring his head stays steady while batting.

The 29-year-old recently made a successful return to international cricket, scoring 135 runs at an average of 45.33 in a two-match Test series against Pakistan, following a two-year absence from the national team.

Shadman’s impressive comeback included a brilliant 93 in the first innings of the opening Test, which boosted his confidence and lifted the team’s morale. Bangladesh's management is hopeful for a similar performance when they face India in the series opener in Chennai on September 19.

Despite being dropped from the squad after the South Africa tour in 2022, Shadman kept working hard. He focused on improving his technique against spin bowling during the Bangladesh Tigers camp before the Pakistan series, which proved crucial to his comeback.

While practicing at Chattogram, Shadman was seen wearing a strap around his neck. He explained that the strap helped him correct his tendency to let his head fall while playing spin. "Sohel Sir (Bangladesh Tigers' head coach) and Babul Sir (Bangladesh A team head coach) helped me recognise this issue during training," Shadman told Cricbuzz.

He acknowledged that his head sometimes dropped slightly when facing spinners, and working with the coaches during the camp helped him address this flaw. Shadman emphasised the importance of staying technically sound in his approach.

Although known for his patient batting style, Shadman clarified that he doesn’t bat with the sole intent of tiring out bowlers. Instead, he waits for opportunities to punish bad balls and doesn’t rely on flashy shots to relieve pressure. "I don't have a plan to wear down the bowlers. I just wait for my time and bat normally," he said.

Shadman also highlighted the importance of showing character on the field. He focuses on waiting for the right balls to score runs and maintaining a solid defence. "My plan is to keep my defence intact and wait for the bad balls. I stick to the basics and try to stay within my control," he added.

Looking ahead to the India series, Shadman said he isn't overly focused on the challenges ahead but rather on how to best prepare. "In India, everything is a challenge, but my focus is on being ready. Indian wickets are good, with consistent bounce, and that helps with batting technique," he said.

Bangladesh arrived in India on September 15 and began their training in Chennai on Monday, September 16, ahead of the first Test. A team official confirmed to *Cricbuzz* that Shakib Al Hasan, who has been playing for Surrey in England as part of his preparation, had yet to join the squad. Shakib, confident after taking nine wickets in a four-day match, is expected to arrive soon to bolster the team.
