Potts to Lead England’s Bowling in Final Test Against NZ

Matthew Potts is set to spearhead England’s pace attack in the third Test against New Zealand, replacing Chris Woakes. The decision, announced on Friday, reflects England captain Ben Stokes’ aim to strengthen the team’s bowling options. With the series already secured following dominant wins in Christchurch and Wellington, the final Test in Hamilton offers an opportunity to experiment with younger talent. 

Potts, a Durham seamer, made a memorable debut in 2022, claiming seven wickets against New Zealand, including dismissing Kane Williamson twice. Although his appearances since have been limited, Stokes highlighted Potts’ stamina and potential, viewing this match as a chance to integrate him further into the squad. The bowling lineup, which includes Brydon Carse, Gus Atkinson, and Shoaib Bashir, is notably inexperienced, with none having played more than 14 Tests. 

Stokes emphasised that Woakes’ exclusion was unrelated to his form. The 35-year-old bowler performed effectively in the first two matches, disproving critics of his away record. Stokes acknowledged Woakes’ contributions during both the New Zealand and Pakistan tours. 

On the New Zealand side, captain Tom Latham confirmed that Will Young would replace Devon Conway, who is unavailable due to personal commitments. Latham refrained from finalising the playing XI, leaving room for changes depending on pitch conditions. Spinner Mitchell Santner remains a potential inclusion, although veteran Tim Southee’s place appears secure as he approaches his retirement Test. 

Latham expressed determination to deliver a strong performance, aiming to counter England’s aggressive tactics in the series finale.
