Pathirana's four-wicket haul outshines Rohit's century as Mumbai suffer defeat

Chennai Super Kings delivered sensational defensive bowling and achieved what might have seemed unthinkable: successfully defending a total in the night at Wankhede Stadium. The total was not huge, pushed just over 200 by an MS Dhoni cameo of 20 off the last four balls of the innings after Shivam Dube had continued his dream season with an unbeaten 66 off 38.

For large parts, it was a contest that lived up to the billing, between the two most successful teams in the IPL and two of the three most popular teams. For the most part, it appeared that the defending champions CSK would be outmatched. Jasprit Bumrah limited them to just 27 runs in four overs, and the Mumbai innings seemed to be progressing smoothly. However, Matheesha Pathirana initiated the comeback by taking two wickets in his first over.

Despite being favourites going into the last seven overs, Mumbai lost by 20 runs as their fast bowlers, led by Pathirana, executed their plan of making the batters hit into the bigger part of the field. Rohit Sharma scored a century, but it was to Mumbai's detriment as he only managed to score 14 runs off 14 balls between overs 13 to 18. He found his form again when the task had become mathematically impossible.
