Pakistan vs. Bangladesh Second Test Moved to Rawalpindi
The second Test between Pakistan and Bangladesh has been relocated from Karachi to Rawalpindi due to ongoing construction at the National Stadium in preparation for the 2025 Champions Trophy.
Originally, Karachi was scheduled to host the match from August 30 to September 3 without spectators because of redevelopment work. However, with the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) deciding to shift the game to Rawalpindi, fans will now have the opportunity to attend.
In a press release on Sunday, the PCB explained that construction experts advised them on the timeline for the National Stadium's readiness. They indicated that although work could continue during match hours, the noise would likely disrupt the players, and the dust from construction could pose health risks to players, officials, broadcasters, and media personnel.
The PCB stated that the construction must proceed without interruption to ensure the venue is ready for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. After consulting stakeholders and considering operational and logistical aspects, the decision was made to hold both Tests in Rawalpindi. Karachi is also scheduled to host England in two months. The PCB noted that while they won't speculate on the hosting of the second Test in Karachi from October 15-19, they will continue to work with architects and construction experts to ensure the safe hosting of the match, keeping the England and Wales Cricket Board informed.
Pakistan has a packed home season ahead, including seven Tests and an ODI tri-series featuring New Zealand and South Africa. The Champions Trophy in February is the centrepiece event, marking the first ICC tournament in Pakistan since the 1996 ODI World Cup. To ensure a successful tournament, the PCB has been upgrading its stadiums.
The PCB had initially hoped to distribute the matches across three venues—Rawalpindi, Karachi, and Multan. However, upgrades at Lahore's Gaddafi Stadium have ruled it out of hosting any matches until early next year. The PCB was initially reluctant to move the Bangladesh Test from Karachi due to logistical concerns.
The first Test between Pakistan and Bangladesh will begin on August 21 in Rawalpindi, where the home team is preparing to play without a specialist spinner, expecting a pitch with pace and bounce. The second Test will also take place at the same venue, starting on August 30.
