Mohammad Nabi Aims for T20 World Cup in 2026
Afghanistan cricket legend Mohammad Nabi expressed his intention on Friday to compete in the next T20 World Cup, which India and Sri Lanka will co-host in 2026.
The 39-year-old veteran, currently captaining Dambulla Sixers in the Lanka Premier League, is determined to continue his national duties for the next two years, provided he is selected.
When asked about his future in international cricket after a rain-interrupted practice session at Premadasa Stadium, Nabi questioned a reporter, "Do you want me to retire?"
He elaborated, saying that as long as his body allows, he plans to keep playing. He mentioned his continued performance in fielding, catching, and bowling, pinpointing his commitment to staying fit.
"Afghanistan needs me at this stage. The Champions Trophy might be my last in the 50-over format, and then maybe one more year," he said, indicating his desire to end his career with the next ICC T20 World Cup.
Nabi expressed hope to participate in the next T20 World Cup, contingent on his selection.
Known as a father figure in the Afghanistan team since 2009, Nabi acknowledged his age and highlighted the importance of maintaining fitness through a strict diet and rigorous training.
Reflecting on the impact of franchise cricket, Nabi noted that playing in various leagues has significantly benefited Afghan cricket, providing experience that players bring to the national team and share with younger players.
He highlighted Afghanistan's impressive performance in the T20 World Cup, reaching the semi-finals and defeating major teams, marking a significant achievement in his career. Nabi concluded with optimism for future successes, praising the team's collective efforts and contributions in the tournament.
