Pathirana was left with three overs to bowl out of seven, with Mumbai needing just 83 runs and all their firepower in the dugout. He started with a dot, pushing the required run rate over two per ball for the first time. A subtle slower ball got the fluent Tilak Varma out. Both former and current captains of Mumbai froze, and
Shardul Thakur followed up the over with a wide-line slower ball. Rohit and Hardik faced three each for a single each. Hardik wasted a review on a wide, frustrating him. Tushar Deshpande then took a wicket and gave away no boundaries in the following over, dismissing Hardik. Rohit appeared fatigued and struggled with timing.
Tim David briefly lifted hopes with two consecutive sixes off Mustafizur, but the bowler then took his wicket with a ball that was too wide for David to reach. Pathirana delivered the finishing touch by rattling Shepherd's stumps with a quick, straight delivery. He was able to use a larger leg-side boundary to his advantage.
The slower balls from the other end complemented Pathirana's delivery. At one point, they had bowled 13 slower balls for just four runs. In total, they delivered 27 slower balls for 36 runs, which was still better than Mumbai's execution of the delivery.
