ICC Begins Chairman Election Process

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has initiated the process for electing a new chairman, with the nomination period opening immediately. Interested candidates must submit their nominations by August 27.

However, whether an actual election will take place remains uncertain, as all eyes are on Jay Shah, the Secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and President of the Asian Cricket Council (ACC). Shah is considered a strong candidate, though he has remained silent on whether he will run.

An ICC insider explained that for an election to occur, there must be more than one candidate in the race. The source mentioned that if Shah decides to file his nomination, he is likely to be elected unopposed, eliminating the need for a vote.

Regardless of Shah's decision, it is clear that the ICC will have a new chairman, as current chairman Greg Barclay has chosen not to seek a third term. The ICC confirmed that Barclay, a New Zealander, will step down at the end of his current term in November, with the new chairman taking office on December 1.

The ICC provided a timeline for the election, stating that current directors must submit nominations for the new chairman by August 27, 2024. If multiple candidates emerge, an election will be held, with the new chairman's term beginning on December 1, 2024.

Unlike the current two-year term, the new chairman will serve a three-year term. Barclay was first appointed as Independent ICC Chair in November 2020 and was re-elected in November 2022.
