Glamorgan Defeats Somerset in One-Day Cup Final

Glamorgan clinched the One-Day Cup with a 15-run victory over Somerset, extending the latter's streak of near-misses this season. In a weather-shortened final at a nearly empty Trent Bridge, Somerset fell short of their target of 187, marking their third major defeat in just nine days after losing the T20 Blast final and their County Championship pursuit.

Despite a late surge from Sean Dickson, Archie Vaughan, and some fortunate moments, Somerset couldn't maintain their momentum. When Dickson was dismissed with 15 balls remaining, Somerset still needed 32 runs but managed only half that, finishing at 171-6.

A damp Sunday had pushed the final to its reserve day, and under gloomy conditions, only a small group of spectators braved the cold. Thanks to the ground staff’s efforts, the match began on time and was reduced to the minimum 20 overs per side.

Glamorgan, after losing the toss and two early wickets, slowly rebuilt their innings. At 65 for 4 after nine overs, with Colin Ingram dismissed for 11, they appeared in trouble. However, a game-changing partnership between Billy Root and Sam Northeast added 78 off 50 balls, including a Kasey Aldridge over that went for 29 runs. Northeast, who scored 63 off 49 balls, was named Player of the Match, with Timm van der Gugten's late 26 off nine deliveries pushing Glamorgan to a challenging total of 186-7.

Somerset, in contrast, struggled to get going. Their innings began slowly and never gained the momentum needed to chase down Glamorgan's total. They reached 23 for 1 after five overs, a far cry from Glamorgan’s 42 for 2 at the same stage. Despite Kiran Carlson dropping Ben Green and a few tense moments, Somerset couldn’t capitalise and finished 15 runs short.

Ultimately, Somerset's missteps—failing to use their spinners and conceding 15 extras, including nine wides—contributed to their defeat. Glamorgan held on, securing their second One-Day Cup in four years and leaving Somerset to reflect on another close but disappointing finish to their season.
