Georgia Voll Looks to Establish Top-Order Role with Sydney Thunder

After fluctuating positions in the WBBL|09, Georgia Voll is determined to secure a consistent spot alongside her close friend Phoebe Litchfield in the Thunder XI.

Georgia Voll aims to solidify her position at the top of the order at her new WBBL club, believing this will lead to more consistent performances this summer.

Voll was announced as Sydney Thunder's latest recruit on Wednesday, signing a three-year contract and ending her four-year tenure with Brisbane Heat. The 20-year-old made her debut for the Heat during WBBL|06 while still in high school.

Despite holding a top-order position in the 50-over WNCL, where she averaged 41 and scored two centuries last season with Queensland, Voll could not secure a similar role at the Heat.

Last season, she began at No.3 but was moved down the order into a finishing role after the club added three overseas batters—Amelia Kerr, Mignon du Preez, and Bess Heath—to an already strong lineup featuring Laura and Grace Harris, Georgia Redmayne, and Jess Jonassen.

The rise of Charli Knott as a powerful allrounder further pushed Voll down the order, and she ended the season batting as low as No.9.

Reflecting on her experience, Voll mentioned that although last year was frustrating, she learned a lot about herself and her cricket style. She had never batted that low before, and it was a completely different role compared to opening. The challenges helped her understand more about her game and how to approach it.

At the Thunder, Voll hopes to secure a top-order position in a team that includes young Australian star Phoebe Litchfield and Australia A batter Tahlia Wilson.

Being still young, Voll wants to focus on consistency this year. She acknowledged that there would be good and bad days but aims to minimise the gap between them. She also plans to work on incorporating different shots into her game and collaborating with her teammates to enhance their collective performance.

Previously involved in both cricket and representative rugby league, Voll humorously admitted some initial unease about playing for a New South Wales-based team. However, the offer from coach Lisa Keightley was too appealing to refuse.

Playing for a team other than the Heat will be a new experience for Voll, but she is excited about joining the Thunder. She considered various factors and consulted with several people, including coach Lisa Keightley, before making her decision.

Voll also updated her recovery from a hamstring injury sustained while playing in England’s domestic 20-over tournament. The injury occurred during her stint with Lancashire Thunder, causing her to miss the white-ball legs of Australia A’s upcoming home series against India A.

However, Voll hopes to be fit for the four-day game on the Gold Coast, especially after scoring a double century in an Australia A intra squad red-ball game in Adelaide earlier this year. She expressed excitement about playing long-form cricket and looks forward to the challenge.
