Dharmawardena Appointed as ICC Anti-Corruption Unit Chair

The ICC has appointed Sri Lanka's Sumathi Dharmawardena as the new independent chair of its Anti-Corruption Unit (ACU), beginning his role on November 1, 2024. According to an ICC statement, the Independent Chair is tasked with overseeing the ACU, managed operationally by the General Manager of Integrity.

Dharmawardena brings extensive experience, having served as the additional solicitor general for Sri Lanka’s Attorney General's Department, representing the government and the sports ministry in numerous legal issues. His background also includes roles with Interpol and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, where he focused on sports corruption investigations and enforcing the Sports Act.

Dharmawardena succeeds Sir Ronnie Flanagan, who is retiring after 14 years in the role. ACU head Alex Marshall will also complete his seven-year tenure at the end of November.
