Danni Wyatt-Hodge Focused on 'Fearless' Cricket

Danni Wyatt-Hodge is determined for England to move past the criticism following their early exit from the T20 World Cup and refocus on the "fearless" brand of cricket that has defined their recent success. Reflecting on the costly mistakes during their loss to the West Indies in the group stage of the tournament, Wyatt-Hodge emphasised that England's defeat was not a reflection of their overall ability.

Speaking ahead of England's first T20I against South Africa in East London on Sunday, Wyatt-Hodge asserted that despite the media backlash, including criticism from former World Cup winner Alex Hartley, the team was committed to improving both individually and collectively.

"We’ve played some outstanding cricket over the years, and we are excited to get back out there," she said. "We just want to focus on playing that fearless brand of cricket again."

While England will face a tough challenge from South Africa, who finished as World Cup runners-up, Wyatt-Hodge is confident in her team's readiness. South Africa, despite resting key players like Marizanne Kapp and Ayabonga Khaka, boasts dangerous talents such as Chloe Tryon and Laura Wolvaardt. The unfamiliarity with some of their younger players, including Eliz-Mari Marx and Nondumiso Shangase, will not deter England, who plan to analyse their opposition thoroughly.

One player who could make a significant impact is fast bowler Lauren Filer, who has been honing her skills and is expected to thrive on the quicker South African pitches.

"Filer's bowling has really improved, and she’s going to be a handful," said Wyatt-Hodge. "She's been working really hard, and if she gets a chance, I’m sure she’s raring to go."

With an eye on the upcoming Ashes series, Wyatt-Hodge stressed the importance of the South Africa tour in its own right, as a platform to showcase England's capabilities and bounce back from recent setbacks.

"This is a massive series for us. We want to show everyone how good we are," she added. "Even though I'm 33, I still feel like one of the youngsters. I want to inspire the new generation by showing them that we’re still striving to improve every day."

The series will culminate with a one-off Test match in Bloemfontein on December 15, a rare and special opportunity for Wyatt-Hodge, who relished her Test debut during the Ashes.

"It hits differently, a Test match does," she said, looking forward to the challenge ahead.
