Boland Awaits Selection Amid Uncertainty Over Hazlewood’s Replacement
Scott Boland remains uncertain about his inclusion in Australia’s squad for the second Test against India, following Josh Hazlewood's sidelining due to a side strain. While Boland appears a strong candidate for the Adelaide Test, selectors have yet to finalize their decision. Sean Abbott and Brendan Doggett have also been added as potential replacements.
Currently, with the Prime Minister's XI in Canberra, Boland has indicated he plans to complete the pink-ball warm-up match before travelling to Adelaide. Despite his impressive Test debut during the 2021 Boxing Day Test and a string of impactful performances, the 35-year-old has not featured in a Test since mid-2023. Boland expressed concern over whether another opportunity might arise but noted his readiness following rigorous off-season training.
Hazlewood’s injury, though considered minor, is a setback as Australia seeks to recover from a 1-0 deficit in the series. Hazlewood had shone in Perth with figures of 4-29, including dismissing Virat Kohli. However, extended spells in the second innings may have aggravated his condition.
Looking ahead, selectors might consider Abbott or Doggett for the third Test in Brisbane, given the tight schedule. Doggett’s recent 6-15 against India A has boosted his prospects, while Abbott’s consistent Shield performances keep him in contention.
Australia’s plans are further complicated by Mitch Marsh's fitness concerns, with Beau Webster potentially debuting in Brisbane if needed. The selectors face critical choices to stabilise the team and capitalise on the remaining matches.
