Andrew Flintoff Feels "Lucky" to Coach in The Hundred After Car Accident
In his first broadcast interview since a severe car accident, Andrew Flintoff expressed feeling "lucky" to be coaching in The Hundred. The former England all-rounder sustained significant facial injuries while filming BBC's Top Gear in December 2022.
Flintoff made his return to cricket, initially joining the staff of England's white-ball team and now serving as the head coach of the Northern Superchargers men's team.
Reflecting on his career, the 46-year-old said, "Cricket has given me so much. It's all I ever wanted to do as a kid, and I was fortunate to live my dream. It also led to opportunities beyond the field, including working in TV because of my cricket background. It's nice to return to cricket."
In the interview, conducted by England fast bowler Kate Cross and published on The Hundred's website, Flintoff did not discuss the accident or its aftermath.
Flintoff's second series of his documentary, Freddie Flintoff's Field of Dreams, is set to premiere on BBC One on August 13. Filmed before and after his accident, the show is expected to feature Flintoff publicly addressing the incident's impact for the first time. In a preview clip, Flintoff mentioned, "Something happened which changed my life forever."
Between 1998 and 2009, Flintoff played 79 Tests for England, including a pivotal role in the legendary 2005 Ashes victory. After retiring from cricket, he transitioned to TV presenting, co-hosting Top Gear from 2019 until his accident. Following the crash, filming of Top Gear was suspended, and in March 2023, the BBC issued an apology to Flintoff. He later agreed to a compensation package, reportedly worth £9 million, according to The Sun. In November 2023, the BBC announced Top Gear would not return "for the foreseeable future."
Flintoff rejoined cricket in September 2023 as part of the coaching staff for England's white-ball team and continued through the T20 World Cup in June, where England reached the semi-finals. His role with the Superchargers marks his first head-coaching position in professional cricket.
Flintoff admitted to feeling a bit nervous but believed it was a natural sign of caring. He stated, "I feel really lucky to be here and want the lads to appreciate playing. When you finish playing, you realise how quickly it passes. It's important to take in the moment and enjoy it. That's what I'm doing now, and it's what I want for my players and teams as well."
