SRH demolishes LSG to knock out Mumbai Indians

Mumbai Indians (MI) became the first team to be eliminated from the IPL 2024 play-off race after Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) beat Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) by ten wickets with 10.2 overs to spare on Wednesday.

SRH's win in Hyderabad moved them up to third place on 14 points, behind Kolkata Knight Riders and Rajasthan Royals who are both on 16 points. With LSG and Delhi Capitals (DC) playing each other on 14 May, one of these teams will get at least 13 points. The best MI can do is 12 points if they win their remaining two league games, which would see them drop out of the top four. The same fate awaits the team that loses on Thursday when Punjab Kings take on Royal Challengers Bengaluru in Dharamsala.

MI began the season under new captain Hardik Pandya but got off to a poor start with three successive defeats. Although they won three of their next four matches, another run of four successive defeats severely damaged their play-off chances.

Jasprit Bumrah has been their leading performer, topping the wicket-taking charts after 12 matches with 18 wickets at an average of 6.20. However, none of their other bowlers have been economical enough and their batsmen have underperformed, with no one scoring more than 400 runs after 12 innings. Tilak Varma is their highest scorer with 384 runs at an average of 42.66, while Suryakumar Yadav is second with 334 in nine innings. Rohit Sharma has just 330 runs in 12 innings.

Hardik has also had a poor season, scoring just 198 runs in 11 innings and taking 11 wickets at an economy rate of 10.58. Although they have given chances to Romario Shepherd, Mohammad Nabi and Nuwan Thushara, they have not been able to get the most out of their overseas players. Their spin department has been their weaker suit, taking just 13 of their 68 wickets in the tournament so far. While they have won three of their six home matches, they have struggled on the road, with their only win in five away matches coming against Punjab Kings.

Their early exit means MI's wait for a sixth IPL title continues, having won their fourth and fifth trophies in 2019 and 2020. Since then, they have only made the playoffs once in four seasons, when they were eliminated by Gujarat Titans in Qualifier 2 in 2023.
