Rain Washes Out Final ODI as SL Clinch Series 2-0 Over NZ
The final ODI between Sri Lanka and New Zealand in Pallekele ended without a result due to persistent rain, sealing a 2-0 series victory for the hosts. This marks Sri Lanka's fifth ODI series win in 2023.
New Zealand had shown promise on a fresh pitch designed to favour the batters, posting 112 for 1 in 21 overs after winning the toss. Will Young (56) and Henry Nicholls (46) forged an unbeaten 88-run partnership, maintaining a brisk scoring rate of nearly six runs per over despite Sri Lanka’s tighter bowling after a wayward start.
Dilshan Madushanka, once a rising star, endured a forgettable outing, leaking runs in his two overs. In contrast, debutant Mohamed Shiraz impressed with figures of 1 for 23 in five overs, claiming Tim Robinson's wicket with the help of a spectacular catch by captain Charith Asalanka.
Sri Lanka made five changes, including a debut for Chamindu Wickramasinghe, while New Zealand handed a debut to seamer Zakary Foulkes. However, both sides missed a chance to further assess their bench strength as rain interrupted proceedings and eventually forced abandonment.
Sri Lanka’s victory in the first two games secured the series, continuing their strong ODI form and providing momentum as they look ahead to upcoming challenges.
