Nepal Suffers Crushing Defeat Against Canada

The Nepal men’s cricket team faced a new setback on Tuesday, falling to a 103-run defeat against hosts Canada in King City, extending their poor form in the ICC Cricket World Cup League 2.

After a disappointing tri-series at the TU Cricket Ground in Kirtipur earlier this year, where they lost all three matches, Nepal continued to struggle, especially with the bat. Chasing a target of 254 at the Maple Leaf North-West Ground, they were bowled out for a mere 150 in 40.1 overs. This marked their first-ever one-day international loss to Canada, having previously held a perfect record in their three earlier meetings.

The defeat, Nepal’s fourth in five matches, contrasts sharply with their earlier success when they won 11 out of 12 games to retain their ODI status and secure a spot in the ICC Cricket World Cup Qualifiers in Zimbabwe.

Canada posted 253-5 in their 50 overs, with Nicholas Kirton leading the way with an unbeaten 73 off 44 balls. Although the target seemed achievable, Nepal’s batting collapse ensured they were never in contention. Dilon Heyliger’s devastating five-wicket haul was the key factor in their downfall.

Opener Kushal Bhurtel’s ongoing struggles continued as he was dismissed by Heyliger for just one run. Asif Sheikh (20 off 30) and captain Rohit Paudel (5 off 5) also fell early to Heyliger, leaving Nepal in a precarious position. Bhim Sharki and power-hitter Dipendra Singh Airee were unable to provide any resistance, returning to the pavilion without making significant contributions.

Karan KC’s 27 off 24 deliveries ended up being Nepal’s highest score. Despite managing to contain Canada at 133-5 by the 37th over, Nepal conceded a flurry of runs in the final overs, allowing Canada to set a challenging target.

The defeat highlights the continuing struggles of the Nepali side, particularly in their batting, as they attempt to regain form in the ongoing League 2 campaign.
