Shimron Hetmyer arrived at the crease with Rajasthan Royals requiring 35 runs from 20 deliveries. Despite Punjab Kings' 147 for 8 feeling at least ten runs too few on a pitch that offered some bounce but no unusual wizardry, the match should never have been this close. Royals' solid, yet unspectacular, 56-run opening partnership suggested they were in control.
Kagiso Rabada's economical spell of 4 overs for 18 runs tightened the match in the latter stages. Rabada took two crucial wickets, that of Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sanju Samson, and was contributing as much as any Kings player to produce a match-winning performance.
The final word went to Hetmyer, who won the game with a six off the penultimate ball, despite an excellent penultimate over from Sam Curran and a good effort from Arshdeep Singh. Hetmyer had hit two sixes in the lead-up to that moment.
