Former Indian cricketer and head coach Anshuman Gaekwad passed away at the age of 71 on Wednesday after a prolonged battle with blood cancer.
Gaekwad initially travelled to London for treatment and was later hospitalised in Vadodara. Recently, he was in the spotlight as several former cricketers, including 1983 World Cup-winning captain Kapil Dev, requested financial assistance for him from the BCCI. Subsequently, BCCI secretary Jay Shah announced a relief package of Rs 1 crore for Gaekwad's treatment. Following his passing, Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences to Gaekwad’s family.
In a statement on social media platform X, the Prime Minister remarked, "Shri Anshuman Gaekwad Ji will be remembered for his contribution to cricket. He was a gifted player and an outstanding coach. Pained by his demise. Condolences to his family and admirers. Om Shanti."
