Young Leadership Takes Center Stage in WBBL

This WBBL season spotlights fresh leadership with Phoebe Litchfield named captain of Sydney Thunder and Annabel Sutherland stepping in as permanent captain for Melbourne Stars, following Meg Lanning’s departure. At just 21, Litchfield becomes the youngest full-time captain in WBBL history, surpassing even England’s Heather Knight, who led Thunder last season. Knight’s injury from the T20 World Cup and upcoming tour of South Africa will limit her involvement in this year’s competition. Litchfield expressed her gratitude, calling it an "honour" to lead her longtime club and work alongside talented players, both seasoned and emerging.

Sutherland, who briefly led the Stars last season, has now fully taken the reins. Stars general manager Blair Crouch praised Sutherland’s dedication to honing her leadership skills, noting her impressive record both domestically and internationally. He also acknowledged Lanning’s contributions as a mentor for Sutherland.

Litchfield, who joined Thunder at age 16, has proven herself with 1212 runs across 67 matches, boasting a career-high strike rate of 130.37 last season. Thunder general manager Trent Copeland called her appointment a "natural progression," highlighting her maturity and composure under pressure, especially in high-stakes matches.

With seasoned players like Chamari Athapaththu, Hannah Darlington, Shabnim Ismail, Sammy-Jo Johnson, and coach Lisa Keightley by her side, Litchfield has a solid support system. Thunder, who reached the Eliminator final last season, kick off their campaign against Hobart Hurricanes on October 28. Meanwhile, Stars face Perth Scorchers in their opener on October 27.
