Jonathan Trott is set to remain as the head coach of the Afghanistan men's cricket team until the conclusion of 2025, as confirmed by a 12-month contract extension from the Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB). This decision comes on the heels of a remarkable 2024 season, highlighted by the team's historic journey to their first World Cup semi-final, during which they achieved notable victories against New Zealand and Australia in the T20 tournament held in the West Indies and the USA. The team's success has also included recent triumphs over South Africa and Bangladesh in the ODI series in Sharjah.
While Trott will oversee the ODI segment of Afghanistan’s upcoming multi-format tour of Zimbabwe, he has decided to step back from coaching in other formats for personal reasons. In his absence, Hamid Hassan will take on the role of head coach, while Nawroz Mangal will serve as assistant coach.
Looking ahead, Afghanistan is poised to participate in their inaugural Champions Trophy next year, having secured qualification by finishing among the top eight teams on the 2023 ODI World Cup points table. Since Trott's appointment in July 2022, which included an initial 18-month term extended in January 2024, Afghanistan has recorded 14 victories in 34 ODIs and 20 wins in 44 T20Is. Trott's coaching role marks his first in this capacity, though he previously acted as a consultant for Scotland during the 2021 T20 World Cup. As a former player, he amassed significant runs in both Test and ODI formats for England.
