Stokes Mocks ICC After England WTC Point Loss

England’s captain Ben Stokes reportedly did not hold back in his response to the International Cricket Council (ICC) after the team faced a point penalty for a slow over-rate during the opening Test against New Zealand in Christchurch. This penalty resulted in both teams losing three important World Test Championship (WTC) points, complicating the race for the WTC final. Although England secured an 8-wicket victory, the ICC’s sanctions clouded the achievement, since both teams fell three overs short of the target after allowances were considered.

According to the regulations, each team lost one point for every over they were short, in addition to incurring a 15% fine on their match fees. The implications of this penalty were significant, especially for New Zealand's chances of qualifying for the final. Stokes expressed his frustration on Instagram, seemingly mockingly addressing the ICC, saying "Good on you ICC," alongside shrugging emojis, and noted that the game concluded with ten hours of play remaining.

The ICC's announcement intensified the competitive climate as England, despite being out of contention for the final and currently in sixth place, looked to build on their strong performance. Meanwhile, New Zealand's penalty was a major setback, forcing them to drop in the standings and jeopardising their chances of qualifying. The outcomes of future series would now play a crucial role in determining their fate, adding significant pressure to their remaining matches.
