Northamptonshire 197 for 6 (Zaib 86) beat Birmingham Bears 186 for 6 (Hain 93, Bethell 50, Willey 2-34) by 11 runs
Saif Zaib's explosive 86 off 41 balls, featuring eight fours and six sixes, led Northamptonshire Steelbacks to an 11-run victory over Birmingham Bears, securing their first Vitality Blast quarter-final in four years.
Zaib formed a crucial partnership of 72 runs in nearly seven overs with Ravi Bopara (19), pushing Northamptonshire to a formidable 197 for 6.
Steelbacks captain David Willey made an immediate impact in the run chase, taking two wickets in the first over, including Moeen Ali on the first ball, reducing the Bears to 11 for 3.
Sam Hain's magnificent 93 off 60 balls, which included 10 fours and three sixes, kept the Bears in contention until the final over. Hain shared a 92-run stand in almost 10 overs with Jacob Bethell, who scored 50 off 31 balls, helping the visitors recover from their early losses.
Despite some powerful hits from Hain and George Garton towards the end, Birmingham fell short. They can, however, take solace in having already secured their quarter-final spot.
Earlier in the match, Ricardo Vasconcelos was dismissed by George Garton on the third ball, caught by Craig Miles at backward square. Warwickshire's bowlers applied pressure early on, with Northamptonshire managing only 40 for 1 in the power play.
Willey soon fell, caught by Miles off Danny Briggs. Zaib then opened his account with three late cuts for four off Miles, surpassing 50 for Northamptonshire in the eighth over before hitting Briggs for six over extra cover. Jake Lintott removed Matt Breetzke for 21, leaving Northamptonshire at 78 for 3 after 10 overs.
Bopara quickly got to work, cutting Moeen Ali for consecutive boundaries. Zaib continued the onslaught, hitting Briggs for another six and taking 18 runs off Lintott's next over, reaching his half-century off just 26 balls.
Bopara's innings ended when he chipped Briggs to deep cover, and Zaib's blitz was halted by Miles, caught by Hain at mid-off. Ashton Agar hit a six off Dan Mousley before Moeen took a leaping one-handed catch to dismiss him. Lewis McManus maintained his form, hitting a six off Zak Foulkes, while Gus Miller added another maximum.
Willey struck early in Birmingham's chase, dismissing Moeen and Mousley, both caught behind in the first over. Ben Sanderson redeemed himself after conceding six wides, dismissing Alex Davies.
Hain and Bethell quickly got into their stride, with Bethell clearing the ropes and Hain hitting two boundaries off Sanderson. Agar bowled tightly but conceded six when Bethell struck him down the ground, with Birmingham reaching 100 in the 12th over.
A stunning diving catch by White accounted for Bethell in Bopara's second over, and Chris Benjamin was caught by Vasconcelos in the deep soon after. Hain kept the momentum, finding the boundary regularly and receiving support from Garton (29).
Needing 39 runs off the last two overs, Hain hit Willey for six and started the final over, bowled by White, needing 25. Despite a six and a boundary, Hain was caught behind off the final delivery, sealing Northamptonshire's victory.
During the interval, Northampton Saints showcased their Premiership trophy on the outfield, celebrating their recent triumph at Twickenham.
