Ranjan Madugalle has achieved a historic milestone, becoming the first match referee to oversee 400 ODIs, marked by his role in the third ODI between India and Sri Lanka at Khettarama.
Since beginning his career as a match referee in 1993, Madugalle has also officiated over 200 Tests, setting another record. Additionally, he served as the ICC's chief match referee until the position was discontinued.
Former elite-panel umpire Simon Taufel, who also managed umpire performance and training for the ICC, expressed admiration for Madugalle. Taufel noted Madugalle's impressive career span, highlighting his service to Sri Lanka, the ICC, and cricket with distinction and integrity. This achievement, Taufel remarked, underscores Madugalle's dedication and commitment to the sport.
In a statement released by the ICC, Madugalle reflected on reaching this significant milestone, describing it as "dreamlike." He expressed great honour and privilege in officiating international cricket for many years, and acknowledged the surreal nature of this accomplishment.
Madugalle shared his surprise at how his career extended beyond three decades after transitioning from a cricketer to an official. He cherished the opportunity to officiate worldwide and participate in numerous World Cups, enjoying every moment.
Madugalle extended gratitude to the ICC, Sri Lanka Cricket, and his colleagues for their support and camaraderie, emphasising that his achievements would not have been possible without the backing of his family and friends.
Before embarking on his officiating career, Madugalle played 21 Tests and 63 ODIs for Sri Lanka as a batter.
