Pubudu Dassanayake received acclaim for his leadership of Canada's cricket team at the recent World Twenty20 Cup. As head coach over the past two years, he led the team to qualify for the finals of a global tournament for the first time and secured a spot in the 2027 World Cup (50 overs) in South Africa and Zimbabwe. During the T20 tournament, Canada, considered an underdog, surprised many by defeating Test-playing nation Ireland and delivering strong performances against eventual champion India, Pakistan, and co-host the United States. However, upon returning home, Dassanayake was unexpectedly dismissed by Cricket Canada.
Though shocked, Dassanayake wasn't entirely surprised by his dismissal, citing interference from the newly elected Cricket Canada board, which he said hindered his ability to select the team. His contract is set to expire on July 31.
Dassanayake believes that the team could have advanced to the tournament's second round if not for the board's decision to add five players without his knowledge. He stated that 90 percent of the players he chose for the World Cup were the same ones who helped the team qualify in Bermuda, emphasising the importance of building a team culture and strong values.
Cricket Canada has not responded to calls for comment, and attempts to reach its president, Amjad Bajwa, were unsuccessful. Canada's captain, Saad Bin Zafar, expressed surprise at the decision, praising Dassanayake's understanding of the game and dedication, which he believes greatly contributed to Canadian cricket and his own development as a player and captain.
Former Cricket Canada president Rajpal Bajwa also expressed surprise, noting Dassanayake's successful track record. This situation is reminiscent of past issues with Cricket Canada, where interference in team selection and player payments previously damaged the country's standing in the game. Dassanayake, who was recruited from his coaching role with Nepal with a year left on his contract, had an agreement with Cricket Canada extending until 2027 if the team qualified for the World Cup—a goal they achieved.
Dassanayake has consulted his lawyers, indicating that the situation may not yet be resolved.
