Ricky Ponting shared his thoughts on the incident between Travis Head and Mohammed Siraj during the second Border-Gavaskar Test in Adelaide, calling it a misunderstanding. The clash occurred after Siraj dismissed Head for 140 with a sharp yorker, just one delivery after the batter had launched him for a six over square leg.
Following the wicket, Siraj and Head exchanged words, which escalated briefly before the latter walked off amid crowd applause. The local fans, however, booed Siraj in defence of their home player. Later, Head clarified that his comment of "well bowled" might have been misinterpreted by Siraj, who appeared to be responding to the taunt.
Both players were penalised under the ICC Code of Conduct, with Siraj receiving a match fee deduction and demerit points for his animated reaction.
Ponting, speaking on The ICC Review, deemed the interaction accidental and largely fuelled by the competitive nature of the game. He noted Siraj's fiery response was typical of a pacer under pressure, particularly after conceding a six.
Reflecting on the aftermath, Ponting praised the duo for quickly resolving the matter. They were seen discussing the incident during India's second innings, and exchanged a handshake post-match.
Ponting emphasised that such moments, while intense, are part of cricket's fabric, and the players handled the situation maturely.
The Border-Gavaskar series continues with the third Test in Brisbane, set to begin on December 14.
