New Zealand on Brink of Historic Win Against India

New Zealand inched closer to a historic series win in India, holding a lead of 188 runs with eight wickets in hand by tea on the fourth day of the Dhaka Test. This game brought them within reach of handing India its first home series defeat in over a decade.

Mitchell Santner, who had never taken more than three wickets in a Test innings, capitalised on the favourable conditions to record impressive figures of 7 for 53, dismantling India’s batting lineup. Supporting him was off-spinner Glenn Phillips, who also contributed key breakthroughs.

New Zealand’s control of the game was evident, as they could afford a few DRS errors and still stay ahead. India’s struggle became apparent from the first over, with the pitch offering variable spin and pace. Santner maintained control with tight, wicket-to-wicket bowling, claiming six bowled or lbw dismissals as India’s lineup collapsed for 156, giving New Zealand a 103-run advantage.

New Zealand’s response with the bat was aggressive. Tom Latham, Devon Conway, and Will Young attacked from the start, quickly putting New Zealand in a strong position at 85 for 2 by tea. While India initially showed resistance, New Zealand’s spinners adapted well. Santner’s precision and persistence continued to trouble India, and even though the lower order added a few runs, New Zealand’s lead looked commanding.

New Zealand's top order made the most of India’s bowling, taking advantage of the softened pitch to push the lead further. Conway’s quick 17 off 25 balls ended with a missed sweep that went lbw, and Young came in with similar attacking intent, adding crucial runs before falling just before tea. Latham remained unbeaten, steering his team to a lead of 181 as they approached a potential series-defining victory.
