In a significant move for the upcoming WBBL season, Melbourne Stars have signed South African all-rounder Marizanne Kapp on a three-year contract.
Kapp, who was the No. 1 draft pick for the Sydney Thunder last season, has been signed under a new rule allowing clubs to secure one multi-year pre-draft player.
The opportunity to collaborate with Stars coach Jonathan Batty and former Australia captain Meg Lanning played a crucial role in Kapp's decision. The trio has previously worked together with the Delhi Capitals in the last two seasons of the WPL. Kapp mentioned that her working relationship with Batty and Lanning greatly influenced her decision to join the Stars, as she appreciated their working style.
Kapp has a distinguished history in the WBBL, having previously played for the Sydney Sixers, where she contributed to consecutive titles, and for the Perth Scorchers, where she was named Player of the Final in the 2021-22 season.
Melbourne Stars general manager Blair Crouch praised Kapp, calling her one of the world's best all-rounders with an impressive track record in both domestic and international cricket. He highlighted her dual talents with bat and ball and noted that her experience would be invaluable to the young squad as they aim to be contenders in WBBL 10.
Earlier this year, Kapp played a pivotal role during South Africa's tour of Australia, delivering a standout performance in their first ODI victory over the home side, scoring 75 runs and taking 3 for 12 at North Sydney Oval.
Kapp is the third overseas player to be signed before the WBBL draft, joining Amelia Kerr (Sydney Sixers) and Nadine de Klerk (Brisbane Heat). The draft is expected to occur in early September, with the WBBL season set to commence shortly after the T20 World Cup in late October.
