Matthew Mott has resigned from his position as England's white-ball head coach, effective immediately, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) announced. Assistant Coach Marcus Trescothick will temporarily take over for the remainder of the summer, which includes three T20Is and five ODIs against Australia in September.
Mott, who replaced Chris Silverwood in May 2022 under a split-coaching structure, led England to a T20 World Cup victory in Australia that same year. During his tenure, England also secured white-ball series wins against several countries, including Australia, Bangladesh, Ireland, Netherlands, New Zealand, and Pakistan. However, the team's seventh-place finish in the ODI World Cup in India, where they narrowly avoided missing out on Champions Trophy qualification, was a significant setback.
Despite a stronger showing in the T20 World Cup in the Caribbean, where England reached the semi-finals before losing to India, the performance was insufficient for Mott to retain his role. ECB Managing Director Rob Key expressed that the team needed a new direction after three World Cup cycles in quick succession. He highlighted the importance of focusing on upcoming challenges, including the Champions Trophy next year and the future cycle of white-ball competitions.
Key highlighted Trescothick's respect within the team and his good relationship with white-ball captain Jos Buttler, suggesting their partnership would provide continuity and stability. The search for a permanent head coach will begin, with the priority being to find the best candidate for the role.
Reflecting on his tenure, Mott expressed pride in his time with the England Men's team, particularly the T20 World Cup win in 2022. He thanked the players, management, and ECB for their support, noting the strong friendships and memories he leaves behind. He also expressed gratitude to the fans for their unwavering support.
Interim coach Trescothick mentioned that planning for the Champions Trophy, scheduled in Pakistan next year, will be a key focus moving forward.
