Kapp and Luus Score Fighting Half-Centuries

In a remarkable display of resilience, South Africa reached 236 for 4 on the second day of the one-off Test in Chennai after India declared their first innings at a record 603 for 6. At stumps, the visitors trailed by 367 runs but showcased commendable technique and determination on a pitch that offered sharp turn and bounce from the second session.

India’s Dominant Batting Performance

India's innings were highlighted by stellar performances from their batters, with Shafali Verma scoring a double century (205), Smriti Mandhana making 149, Richa Ghosh adding a quickfire 86, and Harmanpreet Kaur contributing 69. The hosts declared at 603 for 6, setting a formidable total for South Africa to chase.

South Africa’s Strong Response

South Africa, having faced a 3-0 defeat in the ODI series and a daunting task ahead, began their innings with determination. Laura Wolvaardt and Anneke Bosch initially looked composed, but Sneh Rana got the breakthrough by trapping Wolvaardt lbw. Bosch and Sune Luus then built a solid partnership of 63 runs before Bosch fell to Rana, nicking a ball to slip.

Key Partnerships and Individual Performances

- Sune Luus and Marizanne Kapp: Luus (65 off 164) and Kapp (69* off 125) formed a crucial 93-run stand for the third wicket, displaying a blend of caution and aggression. Luus was eventually trapped lbw by Deepti Sharma, while Kapp remained unbeaten, fighting cramps and a stiff back.

- Rana and Sharma Shine: Sneh Rana took 3 for 61, displaying excellent control and spin, while Deepti Sharma chipped in with a crucial wicket to break the Luus-Kapp partnership.

India’s Bowling Prowess

Rana’s spin proved to be South Africa's main challenge, and she was well-supported by Deepti Sharma and Pooja Vastrakar. Despite a challenging pitch, the South African batters showed resilience, particularly Kapp and Luus, who helped stabilize the innings.

Final Session Resilience

Following Luus’ dismissal, Delmi Tucker fell quickly, but Nadine de Klerk provided support to Kapp, with an unbroken 38-run stand off 56 balls. De Klerk's intent was evident as she struck five fours in her unbeaten 27 off 28 balls.

Score Summary

- India: 603 for 6 declared (Shafali Verma 205, Smriti Mandhana 149, Richa Ghosh 86, Harmanpreet Kaur 69; Nonkululeko Mlaba 1-118, Tumi Sekhukhune 1-112)

- South Africa: 236 for 4 (Sune Luus 65, Marizanne Kapp 69*; Sneh Rana 3-61, Deepti Sharma 1-39)

With 367 runs still to bridge, South Africa has a challenging task ahead. However, their fightback on day two, led by Kapp and Luus, sets up an intriguing contest as they aim to narrow the deficit and mount a defence against a potent Indian attack.
