Jasprit Bumrah has once again ascended to the top of the ICC Test bowling rankings after his impressive six-wicket haul against Bangladesh in Kanpur. Bumrah takes over the No. 1 position from his teammate R Ashwin, who was named Player of the Series against Bangladesh. India also saw significant movement in the Test batting rankings, with Kanpur’s Player of the Match, Yashasvi Jaiswal, jumping to third place after just 11 Tests.
Sri Lankan left-arm spinner Prabath Jayasuriya, after his stellar performances in the 2-0 series win over New Zealand in Galle, rose to joint-seventh in the bowling rankings, despite having played only 16 Tests.
Other notable ranking changes include India’s Virat Kohli moving back into the top 10 batters, advancing six places to sixth after scores of 47 and an unbeaten 29 in Kanpur. Sri Lanka’s Kamindu Mendis also saw a substantial rise to No. 11 after his remarkable 182 not out in the second Test against New Zealand. Bangladesh’s Mehidy Hasan Miraz has climbed to fifth in the all-rounders’ rankings, joining his compatriot Shakib Al Hasan, who holds steady at No. 3.
This marks Bumrah’s second tenure as the world’s top Test bowler, with his first appearance at No. 1 occurring in February earlier this year. At that time, he became the first Indian fast bowler to achieve the top spot, surpassing Kapil Dev, who previously held India’s highest-ever ranking for a pace bowler at No. 2 in the 1979-80 season. Interestingly, in both instances, Bumrah has displaced Ashwin from the top position.
As it stands, Bumrah leads the rankings with Ashwin close behind, trailing by just a single point with 869 rating points.
