Jacob Oram is the New Men’s Bowling Coach

Former New Zealand allrounder Jacob Oram has been named the new bowling coach for the men’s cricket team, stepping into the role left vacant by Shane Jurgensen in November 2023. Oram will officially begin his duties on October 7.

Oram’s appointment follows his temporary stint with the team during the 1-1 Test series draw in Bangladesh in late 2023, the 3-0 T20I series loss to Australia in February 2024, and the Men’s T20 World Cup in June 2024, where New Zealand was eliminated in the group stage. The 46-year-old began his coaching career in 2014 as the bowling coach for New Zealand A, later assuming the same role for the New Zealand Women’s cricket team from 2018 until the Women’s ODI World Cup in March 2022.

Oram has also gained coaching experience across various franchises, serving as the head coach of Central Hinds in the Super Smash, assistant coach of Northern Warriors in the T10 league, and bowling coach of MI Cape Town in the SA20.

During his 11-year playing career, Oram represented New Zealand in 33 Tests, 160 ODIs, and 36 T20Is. He expressed enthusiasm about his new role, hoping to impart his knowledge to the emerging bowlers and prepare them for the challenges of international cricket.

Oram stated that he is thrilled to be back with the Black Caps, a team that has been a significant part of his life, and he feels honoured to continue contributing to their progress. He stated that a new wave of talent is emerging in the Black Caps’ bowling lineup, and he aims to share his experience to help these players excel at the international level.

New Zealand’s head coach Gary Stead also expressed his excitement about Oram joining the coaching staff. He highlighted that Oram’s extensive playing career and experience in franchise cricket will be valuable in bringing out the best in the players, given the evolving nature of the modern game. Stead noted that Oram’s understanding of the international game and franchise cricket will be crucial in adapting to the changing dynamics of cricket.
