During Bangladesh's political unrest, former cricket captain and current MP Shakib Al Hasan is under fire from fans for his silence on the issue. Currently in Canada for the GT20 league, Shakib encountered Bangladeshi fans protesting against him. Despite the commotion, Shakib chose to walk away without responding.
Elected to the National Assembly under the Awami League led by Sheikh Hasina Wazed, Shakib has been criticised for not speaking out about the turmoil in Bangladesh. During a recent GT20 Canada 2024 match, a fan asked him about the political situation in his home country. Shakib responded, "What did you do for the country?" which further enraged fans. Mohammed Jalal Yunus, Chairman of the Bangladesh Cricket Board's Cricket Operations Committee, disapproved of Shakib's reaction, stating it was inappropriate to question others' contributions.
The political crisis in Bangladesh has also impacted other notable figures. Recently, demonstrators set fire to the home of former captain Mashrafe Mortaza, who is also an MP for the Khulna Division under the Awami League. Mortaza's home was damaged and set ablaze following Sheikh Hasina Wazed’s departure from the country. Mortaza was re-elected in the general elections earlier this year.
