Derbyshire Secures Long-Awaited Championship

Derbyshire finally broke their five-year drought at their County Ground, securing a dominant 10-wicket victory over Glamorgan in the Vitality County Championship Division Two match.

On the fourth morning, Derbyshire bowled out Glamorgan for 287, leaving them with just 27 runs to chase for their first Championship win at Derby since 2019. Luis Reece, who took the final two wickets, and Harry Came needed less than seven overs to wrap up Derbyshire's first red-ball win since defeating Worcestershire away in July 2022.

Glamorgan did not go down easily, with Mason Crane and Dan Douthwaite putting up a resilient eighth-wicket stand of 47 runs from 136 balls before their former captain, David Lloyd, ended the partnership.

With rain in the forecast, Derbyshire knew they had to act quickly on the final day to claim the last three Glamorgan wickets. Starting the day still trailing by 25 runs, Glamorgan reduced the deficit early on, with Crane striking two boundaries off Zak Chappell in the morning's second over.

Derbyshire immediately took the new ball, with left-arm spinner Jack Morley partnering with Chappell. Chappell should have dismissed Crane when he mistimed a pull shot to deep midwicket, but Nick Potts, despite a dive, couldn't hold onto the catch.

Morley managed to get some sharp turn, but Crane and Douthwaite continued to frustrate the Derbyshire bowlers. When Reece replaced Chappell, Crane drove him to the cover boundary, putting Glamorgan into a slender lead. Crane added another boundary off Morley, but the breakthrough came when Lloyd, bowling his offspin, trapped Crane lbw with a delivery that kept low, ending his 28-run innings off 66 balls.

Douthwaite continued to resist, but Derbyshire wrapped up the innings in quick succession. Reece trapped Fraser Sheat lbw, and then bowled Douthwaite with another delivery that stayed low, bringing Derbyshire to the verge of victory.

Reece sealed the win by sweeping Sam Northeast for two consecutive boundaries, securing Derbyshire's first Championship victory at Derby since their win over Sussex in August 2019.
