Boland May Step Aside as Hazlewood Nears Full Fitness

Scott Boland's spectacular return to Test cricket in Adelaide captivated fans, but his role might be short-lived as Josh Hazlewood progresses in his recovery from a side strain. Hazlewood, who impressed in the first Test in Perth, missed the second match but has reportedly "ticked every box" this week, aiming for a return in the third Test at the Gabba starting December 14.

Boland’s performance against India included five wickets, showcasing his knack for striking early and thrilling the crowd. However, Pat Cummins acknowledged that Boland could make way for Hazlewood if he is declared fit. Boland, who hadn't played a home Test in two years, impressed with his consistency and ability to break through at crucial moments, dismissing key Indian batters like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli.

Despite this, Hazlewood's experience and record of 278 Test wickets make him a strong contender to return. Hazlewood himself expressed frustration with his recurring injury but remains optimistic about contributing fully. He emphasised the importance of caution, given his past issues with similar injuries.

Boland’s Adelaide performance underlined Australia’s depth in pace bowling, a potential game-changer in this series. His ability to seamlessly step into the attack provides Australia with a luxury most teams lack. Should Hazlewood reclaim his spot, Boland will likely remain a key figure in the squad, ready to deliver whenever called upon.

Australia’s pace depth, paired with Boland's reliability, highlights their robust strategy for the series, as the focus shifts to the Gabba.
