Bangladesh's High-Performance Unit Gears Up for Australia Tour

With a focus on the upcoming two-match Test series against Australia in 2027, Bangladesh's High-Performance Unit is preparing for a tour down under.

According to the Future Tour Program (FTP), Bangladesh will visit Australia in 2027 for a two-Test series, marking their first tour to the country in 19 years. During this long interval, Bangladesh has rarely played longer format cricket in Australia at any level, making the unfamiliar conditions their biggest challenge.

The High-Performance Unit's tour will begin with two four-day matches against Pakistan Shaheens in Darwin starting July 17. Although Cricket Australia has not officially announced it, BCB Game Development Chairman Naimur Rahman indicated that the two-Test series in 2027 is also scheduled to be held in Darwin. This tour is seen as more than just a series for Bangladesh's emerging stars.

Test opener Mahmudul Hasan Joy will lead the four-day squad, with middle-order batsman Shahadat Hossain serving as vice-captain. Another Test opener, Shadman Islam, is included in the squad to gain experience in these unfamiliar conditions.

Naimur Rahman explained that some players in the squad are part of the national team, and they are preparing for the 2027 series with these four-day matches. He pinpointed the importance of acclimatizing players to foreign environments to avoid struggles during their first experiences abroad. This tour, according to Rahman, is a new addition to the HP program, aimed at creating opportunities for players to serve the country effectively in the future.

National selector Hannan Sarkar, who will join the tour, echoed these sentiments, noting that the 50-over and T20 matches will also help players adapt to different conditions. He highlighted the significance of the Australia tour, as Bangladesh rarely gets the chance to play there.

Sarkar mentioned that this tour offers invaluable experience in all three formats of the game, as players will face the challenges of playing cricket in Australia. The squad includes a mix of players from the High-Performance Unit and the national team, preparing them for the FTP tour of Australia in 2027. This approach prioritises those expected to play in the longer format, while also focusing on players suited for white-ball cricket.

After the four-day matches, the HP Unit will participate in a 50-over tri-series involving Pakistan Shaheens and the Northern Territory of Australia. The series will begin on August 1 against Northern Territory and conclude on August 6 against Shaheens. The tour will end with the Northern Territory's T20 Series, featuring Pakistan Shaheens and some leading Big Bash teams.
