Bangladesh Focuses on Cricket Amid Politics

Bangladesh recently experienced political upheaval, resulting in the resignation of their prime minister and the establishment of a caretaker government. This turmoil has even raised doubts about their ability to host the Women's T20 World Cup in October.

Amidst these challenges, the Bangladesh men’s cricket team is set to return to action with a tour of Pakistan, marking their first match in two months. The two Tests are part of the World Test Championship, and captain Najmul Hossain Shanto is determined not to let the situation at home distract the team, despite the fact that one consequence of the government’s collapse was the end of his teammate Shakib Al Hasan’s term as a member of parliament.

Shakib has remained silent about the political situation, focusing entirely on his cricket. Shanto expects Shakib to maintain his professionalism, noting that he has been fully committed during practice sessions. On the eve of the first Test in Rawalpindi, Shanto mentioned that Shakib is in excellent shape and eager to perform well, adding that Shakib’s extensive experience allows him to know exactly how to prepare for the game. Shanto expressed confidence that Shakib will deliver something special during the series.

Shakib's all-round abilities make him a crucial player for Bangladesh, but they also have Mehidy Hasan Miraz, a capable lower-order batsman, who is likely to be included in the XI to avoid a lengthy tail. Batting Mehidy at No. 8 could allow Bangladesh to field three fast bowlers and two spinners, including both Shakib and Mehidy. Shanto hinted that Nahid Rana, known for his speed of up to 150kph, might be one of the fast bowlers included in the lineup.

Shanto indicated that Rana is in good form and could be part of their usual combination, noting that the pitch in Rawalpindi might offer an advantage to pacers, which will be considered when finalising the XI. Shanto also praised Shadman Islam’s recent performances against Pakistan A in Australia, saying that he has been batting well and preparing diligently.

Bangladesh is in dire need of a batting revival, and the prospect of a batting-friendly pitch in Rawalpindi offers some encouragement. Shanto acknowledged their recent struggles with the bat, especially in the last Test series against Sri Lanka in March-April. However, he expressed confidence in the team’s preparation for this series, stating that the players have worked hard to improve and believe they can perform better with the bat.

Shanto accentuated his personal focus on developing his batting skills, dedicating every practice session to improving in areas where he has been lacking. He remains hopeful that this effort will pay off in the matches against Pakistan.

Despite the challenges, Shanto remains optimistic about Bangladesh’s chances in the series opener in Rawalpindi, particularly with their strong fast-bowling unit.

He expressed confidence that records can change and that it won’t be easy for Pakistan. Shanto highlighted the balance in their side, with a good mix of fast bowlers and quality spinners, and believes that the team is well-prepared to achieve something special. The seamers, he noted, are especially excited to take advantage of the conditions in Rawalpindi.
