Bangladesh Captain Comments on Leg-spinner Rishad Hossain's Test Readiness

Bangladesh's all-format captain, Nazmul Hossain, stated on Tuesday, July 16, that young leg-spinner Rishad Hossain is not yet prepared for Test cricket.

Rishad's name was considered for the upcoming two-match Test series against Pakistan after his impressive performance in the T20 World Cup, where he took 14 wickets and ranked as the fourth-highest wicket-taker.

Bangladesh has a history of transitioning successful players from one format to another. However, Nazmul expressed doubts about Rishad's readiness for Test cricket, suggesting that the selectors are better positioned to make that decision. He shared his perspective at a private event in Dhaka, stating, "From my experience, I don't think he is ready for red-ball cricket yet."

Nazmul praised outgoing spin bowling coach Mushtaq Ahmed for his contributions to Rishad's tactical development, while also acknowledging the significant role of local coaches. He explained, "Mushtaq has done tremendous work with Rishad, but local coaches have also played a big part in his development. They helped him understand his shortcomings and motivated him."

He added that the team must move past their T20 World Cup performance and focus on the new challenges of Test cricket. "Whether we do well or not, we must move ahead. This is a different format with new players."

The return of veterans like Mushfiqur Rahim and Mominul Haque is expected to strengthen the team for the Test series against Pakistan. Nazmul expressed optimism, saying, "Everyone has had enough time to prepare. We want to start this series with a positive approach."

The team will face Pakistan in Rawalpindi (August 21-25) and Karachi (August 30-September 2). Preparation includes two practice matches in Chittagong, giving the squad ample time to ready themselves.

"It's an important series against Pakistan. Players who went to Australia with the High-Performance Unit might join the main squad. We have practice matches and sessions to prepare ourselves in the best way possible," Nazmul concluded.
