Despite Ashutosh Sharma's heroic 28-ball 61, Punjab Kings suffered yet another close defeat in IPL 2024, this time losing to Mumbai Indians in Mullanpur by nine runs.
Early in the chase, the Kings were in danger of being bundled out cheaply when Jasprit Bumrah and Gerald Coetzee combined to leave the hosts 14 for 4 in 2.1 overs. Soon, the score became 77 for 6. Ashutosh and Shashank Singh, with a 25-ball 41, injected life into the contest.
With only three overs remaining, the Kings required just 25 runs to win. Unfortunately, Ashutosh was dismissed at the beginning of the 18th over, and Mumbai capitalised on this advantage. This was the fourth time Kings had lost in the final over this season, and their fifth defeat overall. As a result, Mumbai moved up from ninth to seventh place in the table.
